Let me start by saying, yes, I know it’s “Brussels Sprouts”, but, you wouldn’t believe the number of people searching “Brussel Sprouts”. To help them (or you lol) out and give you a little history on this veg, I’m using the popular spelling searched here in the states. Forgive me all you English majors!
Now, if you still are nervous about using your air fryer, then this recipe is for you. It’s a simple one to jump right into and fairly fool proof! But first, visit my post here on 5 Tips for the New Air Fryer User to get a few quick tips on the appliance that’s about to change your life in the kitchen!
Why You Need to Make Brussels Sprouts from the Freezer In Your Air Fryer
The dietitian in me would say because we all need to eat more fruits and veggies, which is true, but the mom and busy lady in me says it’s because it’s so easy and tasty!
Seriously, you haven’t lived until you’ve made your Brussels sprouts from a freezer bag! Not only are the Brussels sprouts already cleaned and trimmed for you when you buy them in the frozen food section, but they’re also very affordable at just $1.99 for a one-pound bag at many markets!
What You Need to Make Frozen Brussels Sprouts in the Air Fryer
Here are a few things to keep in mind about the ingredients!
Brussels sprouts: this recipe calls for frozen. If you use fresh, you may need to adjust cooking time.
Soy sauce: if you have a gluten or soy allergy, swap this out with a coconut aminos or other alternate to soy sauce.
Red miso: while I’ve only tested this recipe with red miso, a follower tried white miso and she said it turned out great! So use what you can find.
Sesame oil: I would recommend not swapping the entire oil needs in here for straight sesame oil. While this gives a flavorful burst to the sprouts and prevents them from sticking to the air fryer basket, I do not recommend using it fully in the miso dressing. It becomes to powerful.
Vegetable oil: you can use the vegetable oil or canola oil for a neutral taste that helps make the dressing.
How to Make Frozen Brussels Sprouts Air Fryer Perfection
Steps 1-4
I swear this is the easiest recipe, ever! You will want to start by rinsing, drying, and then slicing the Brussels sprouts in half. This helps ensure they air fryer evenly!
Then toss them with the sesame oil and air fry for 10 minutes at 370 degrees F, then bump up the temp to 400 degrees F and finish for 5 to 7 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. This will give a nice, even char.
Step 5
Step 5
Prepare the miso dressing by whisking remaining ingredients together while the Brussel sprouts are in the air fryer.
Steps 6-8
When cooking completes, remove Brussels sprouts from air fryer basket and serve as a side or fun appetizer with the miso dressing!
Pairing with the fun mini serving sticks is a great way to get the entire family excited to try a new vegetable too if this is new to them!
That tiny hand above is my toddler who “doesn’t like Brussels sprouts” yet was the first one to dive in when I set this out for dinner!
Recipe Tips + Notes
Keep these tips in mind as you make this recipe!
- Place the frozen Brussels sprouts in a colander to help rinse then first. This helps “wake them up” from being in the freezer and get off any ice debris that could potentially make a soggy end product if placed in the air fryer.
- Then, take the 2 to 4 minutes and slice them in half! It’s totally worth it for helping them cook evenly in a shorter amount of time.
- Note, if you like a more crispy texture, simply extend their time in the air fryer. I recommend not bumping up the air fryer temp until at least 10 minutes of cooking has happened to prevent burning or over-charring.
- When making the miso dressing, if you crew is not big on spice, reserve the red pepper flakes for an optional topping.
- Remember air fryer temperatures vary slightly based on the model and basket type. So, until you get to know your own air fryer, keep an eye on the recipe you’re trying out to prevent burning until you know how to modify the time for each specific recipe you’re making! Don’t worry, it’s usually just a minute or two!
