Don’t Let Obstacles Get in Your Way – Surviving Infertility
Happy Warrior Women Wednesday lovelies!
Today it’s a real pleasure to introduce to you a woman who was brought into my life through a fellow colleague.
She and I were both on the same IVF route at about the same time, and, through leaning on each other via social media, we formed a bond.
I am so honored to introduce you to the wonderful Burke Barr!
Please read on to get to know Burke.
Tell your story. What was your fertility diagnosis? Did you have one?
Low ovarian egg reserve
How many years did you try? Ovulation calendars? IUI? IVF?
We tried for 6 months before our doctor recommended IVF. The first step was IUI, followed by three rounds of IVF. All of the treatments were during a one-year period. I had a spontaneous pregnancy a month after the last round of IVF that ended in miscarriage. We took a 6-month break because I needed to have a minor procedure for my Crohn’s disease. In December of 2016, we did tried egg donation in the Czech Republic. I found out on January 4, 2017 that is was unsuccessful.
How has infertility changed you?
Infertility has been both a blessing and a curse. I have felt deep sadness and despair, but also joy from hearing that our story has helped other women open up about their struggles. Too many women are embarrassed and ashamed about their infertility. There is a terrible stigma that comes with being childless, whether by choice or because of the inability to get pregnant naturally or through medical technology. The bright spot in my difficult journey is the hope that my story will help others overcome their sadness or feelings of inadequacy.
What advice do you have to women with infertility?
Do not let infertility define you. Reach out to others struggling and create a support network. Do not hide and be ashamed of your infertility, but rather be comforted by your strength and determination to go the distance to create your family. Finally, do not be afraid to try something unconventional. My husband and I travelled over 4,0000 miles to a fertility clinic in the Czech Republic for our egg donor. Even though it did not result in pregnancy, we are happy that we tried.
