Press the Saute function on the Instant Pot and pour milk, half-and-half, sugar, and cocoa powder into the metal pot. Whisk until all ingredients combine and begin to heat up, about 5 to 8 minutes. Press Cancel and stir in the vanilla extract.
Serve warm with mini marshmallows or desired topping.
Notes
Here are a few tips to ensure you get a perfect cup of hot chocolate every time!
Set the SAUTE function to ON before you add the ingredients into the metal pot. It will help begin heating the milk so you don’t spend 10+minutes in front of the pot!
Be sure to continually whisk the ingredients together as you heat them. You do not want to get a BURN message because the sugar and cocoa mixture have coated the bottom because you lost track of time! It’s only 6 minutes friends!
For a really creamy cup that is still lower in fat and sugar than store bought hot chocolates, use skim half-and-half! It adds a lot of flavor and texture and is worth the extra calories!
If you’re wondering how to make this a bit more seasonal, then checkout these simple flavor pairings!
Pumpkin Pie Spice: Mix 1/2 teaspoon into the pot as your whisking the ingredients together!
Gingerbread Spice: Mix 1/2 teaspoon into the pot as your whisking the ingredients together!
Peppermint Extract: Sub 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract for vanilla extract in the final heating stage. Garnish with chopped candy canes!
